Like every year, this year I had the opportunity to hold a workshop at the Győrkőcfesztivál, (a children’s festival in Győr, Hungary) and brought creative tasks using dice. At the same time, there was a fantastically rich exhibition of the artist’s work, which was being presented for the first time in Hungary, at the Museum of Fine Arts. I thought that a Matisse collage would be perfect for the outdoor event because of this.

Mint minden évben, idén is a Győrkőcfesztiválon tartottam workshopot, dobókockás alkotófeladatokat vittem. A Szépművészeti Múzeumban épp akkor nyílt egy fantasztikusan gazdag, hazánkban először bemutatott kiállítás a művész munkáiból. Úgy gondoltam, hogy emiatt egy Matisse-kollázs épp illeni fog a szabadtéri rendezvényre.

I had already seen tasks for children dealing with Matisse’s paper collages in several places, so I browsed through them and eventually bought the task sheet from Hope Creek Studios (they have fantastic resources!) I had to translate it into Hungarian for the children, and since parents usually sit with their children during these events, I supplemented the task sheet with some information about the exhibition, in case they feel like going to see it.

Több helyen láttam már Matisse papírkollázsaival foglalkozó feladatot gyerekeknek, ezeket böngésztem át, és végül a Hope Creek Studios feladatlapját vettem meg. Le kellett fordítanom magyarra a gyerekek számára. és mivel a szülők ilyenkor ott ücsörögnek a gyerekeik mellett, kiegészítettem a feladatlapot némi információval a kiállításról is, hátha kedvük támad megnézni.

The game can be played in the usual way: we roll the dice, advancing column by column, and whichever shape the dice chooses for us, we cut out of colored paper and glue it onto the paper.

A játék a szokásos módon játszható: oszloponként haladva dobunk a kockával, és amelyik formát választja nekünk a dobókocka, azt vágjuk ki színes papírból és ragasztjuk a papírra.

To lead a workshop or lesson, I’ll share a few experiences:

I suggest that the children cut out the shapes in the first two columns in large sizes, while the shapes in the other columns can be smaller. It’s easier to draw the smaller dots and stripes with a felt-tip pen onto the paper collage. You can also draw the shapes to be cut out onto the colored papers beforehand, then glue the graphite side of the paper, which makes for a nicer result. Some older children also supplemented their collages with unique graphics. For the youngest children (even 3-4-year-olds were sitting down to create at the Győrkőcfesztivál), I pre-cut the shapes and they enjoyed gluing them together.

We can freely deviate from the colors on the table because it’s not certain that we can obtain papers of exactly that color. The more skillful children can decide beforehand what color harmony to use.
We can work in a way that, after cutting out, we immediately glue the shapes onto the background, but we can also compose more consciously by gluing only after we have selected all the shapes and cut them out of the colored paper.

Az alkotójáték vezetéséhez leírok pár tapasztalatot:

Javaslom, hogy az első két oszlop formáit nagy méretben vágják ki a gyerekek, a többi oszlop formái már lehetnek kisebbek. Az apróbb pöttyöket, csíkokat filctollal könnyebb rárajzolni a papírkollázsra. Elő is lehet rajzolni a kivágandó formákat a színes papírokra, ekkor a papír grafitos felét ragasztózzuk be, úgy szebb lesz a végeredmény. Néhány idősebb gyerkőc egyedi grafikákkal is kiegészítette kollázsát. A legkisebbek számára (a Győrkőcfesztiválon 3-4 évesek is leültek alkotni) előre kivágtam formákat, ők az összeragasztást élvezték.
A táblázat színeitől bátran térjünk el, hiszen nem is biztos, hogy be tudunk szerezni épp ilyen színű papírokat. Az ügyesebbek előre eldönthetik, hogy milyen színharmóniát alkalmaznak.
Dolgozhatunk úgy is, hogy a kivágás után azonnal a háttérre ragasztjuk a formákat, de komponálhatunk kicsit tudatosabban is úgy, hogy csak akkor ragasztunk, mikor már az összes formát kiválasztottunk, kivágtuk a színes papírból.
